It is set in a fictional town in southeastern Michigan called Royal Woods, based on Savino's hometown of Royal Oak. The series was pitched to the network in 2013 as a two-minute short film entered in the annual Animated Shorts Program. It entered production the following year.[3] The series is based on Savino's own childhood growing up in a large family, and its animation is largely influenced by newspaper comic strips. Lela, having caught the the crown with her tail, hands it to Lincoln so he can resume his duties as the duke. Angus initially declines the offer, believing he's just a simple groundskeeper, but after being told by the citizens how much he does for the town, and with the blessing of all the ghosts of the Louds' ancestors (especially the Duke), Angus agrees to take on the new role. Lela then takes Morag and drops her off on a small rock island far away from Loch Loud, inhabited by a family of constantly-barking seals.

As Morag waves farewell to the Louds, she gleefully believes she succeeded in her mission and proceeds to burn Aggie's journal in a fireplace to get rid any evidence of her wrongdoings. However, the moment she leaves the room, Lucille arrives and retrieves the book the fireplace, where, after looking through the pages, learns that Aggie had betrayed them. Outside the castle, the angry crowd is informed by Morag that the Louds are finally gone, much to their excitement. However, when the citizens prepare to leave, she lies to everyone by telling them that before they left, they said that she should be the duchess of Loch Loud. After a hasty coronation ceremony, Morag is officially crowned as the new duchess, but Angus, unable to see her forcefully put herself in a position of power, reveals her treachery to everyone by telling them that the Louds never gave her permission to be the duchess because he was with them the entire time.

Later, in Loch Loud, Lincoln is at work cleaning a chimney, when a flyer suddenly flies into his face, showing only his sisters. Lincoln quickly runs into the town center and discovers to his horror that his sisters are showing off their talents and skills to everyone in Loch Loud. Back at the castle, Lincoln complains that he's once again overshadowed by his sisters. Morag, faking pity for him, gestures to a painting showing the duke riding on top of his dragon, giving Lincoln the idea that he should ride the now-fully-grown Lela in the same way.

To make matters worse, Aggie left the Dragon Stone inside her journal, and Morag has decided to use it to get rid of the Louds. The Loud children head back to the town on a rowboat and team up to defeat Morag and un-hypnotize Lela. The sisters eventually get the scepter back and Lincoln, using his magic skills and with help from Lily, destroys the Dragon Stone, which breaks Lela out of her spell. The citizens of Loch Loud congratulate the family and ask Lincoln to resume his place as the duke of the kingdom, though Lincoln declines and instead offers the crown to Angus instead, feeling he deserves it more. This decision is approved by the citizens and the other ghosts of the Loud ancestors. Lincoln admits to the family he wishes he were special as his sisters, though his sisters tell him that he is special because he takes care of them, and the family happily hugs.

This causes the family to be mesmerized by her appearance, expect for Lynn Sr., as he knocked himself out due to his fear of ghosts. Some fans claimed it to be a departure from the series, especially with Lincoln's character, and deeming it an improvement over the fourth and fifth seasons. Lincoln further explains that if they find out, they can take a trip there and learn more about their ancestors. Lisa offers to find out, and, after sending Lynn Sr. through a series of dizzying experiments, does a DNA test using some of his saliva. After running the numbers, Lisa concludes that Lynn Sr.'s side of the family hails from Scotland.
In the sixth season, Lincoln searches for his birthday present, Luna conceals a secret from Mrs. Bernardo, and Clyde receives an unexpected chance to study culinary science in France, met with disapproval from the gang. Accidentally breaking their parents’ priceless vase, the kids devise a plan to travel back in time to their wedding day to avoid punishment. A spin-off, entitled The Casagrandes, was put into development by Nickelodeon in March 2018. The caretaker, Morag, digs up a diary of her great-great-grandmother; it reveals how that woman ran the original Loud family off some 400 years ago using a magic gem.
Morag, at her wit's end, proceeds to fight the crown out of Lincoln's hands, accidentally causing them and Lily to fall off the cliff. As Lincoln and Lily brace for impact, Lela swiftly catches them (on her back) and Morag (with her claws) and flies them back to the courtyard. As the Loud family sadly sails away from Loch Loud, Lucille hurriedly catches up with them and reveals to them about the Dragon Stone and that Morag betrayed them to take the crown for herself. Piecing everything together, Lincoln realizes that's why his flight with Lela was so catastrophic, but he still believes he's to blame, since he let Morag manipulate him, and says that he must fix everything. The Loud kids (minus Lily) row back to Loch Loud in a dinghy, where they witness the citizens attempting to flee in boats. Arriving at the dock, Angus is surprised to the kids return, and Lincoln reveals that he and his sisters have a plan to get the royal scepter out of Morag's hands and stop her tyranny once and for all.

After running the numbers, Lisa concludes that Lynn Sr.'s side of the family hails from Scotland, much to the kids' fascination. Lincoln, having regained consciousness, witnesses Morag about to harm his family, and before Lela can fire her breath, he quickly jumps into the line of fire with the crown, prompting Morag to hastily stop Lela from attacking. Lincoln tells Morag that if she wants the crown, she'll have to get it from him first. Lincoln quickly runs through the hole they crashed through earlier, and as Lela crawls through, her large size causes the damaged wall to collapse, stopping the family and Angus from reaching them. As the family panics on how to reach them, Lily begins crawling under the rubble, as she's small enough to get through it.
As she cleans, she begins to lament to a portrait of her ancestor, Aggie, who was responsible for driving the Louds' ancestors away 400 years ago in order to achieve peace and quiet. As Morag continues to suffer from the kids' shenanigans (while also reminding herself it's only for one week), Lincoln announces to Angus his plans on becoming the duke. However, Morag ruins the moment by revealing that Lincoln is only staying in Scotland for a week, causing the citizens to believe they celebrated with a tourist and not a permanent resident. At Angus' suggestion, Lincoln tries to convince his family that they should move to Scotland. Using a slideshow presentation, Lincoln explains that moving to Scotland is a good thing as they found themselves and their culture here, and that if they stay, they can get all the fame and adoration they want.
Morag still believes she has won, as she finally got all the peace and quiet to herself, but in a sudden twist of irony, the island is inhabited by a family of seals who constantly bark at each other, making Morag scream in despair. At the castle, the sisters commend Lincoln by saying that passing the crown to Angus was so honorable of him, but question what he said about not feeling as special as them. Lincoln finally confesses to them that the reason he feels this way is because they're all talented in some way and are constantly praised as a result; winning trophies and getting recognized, while he has nothing to show, making him feel like he's not special as them. However, the sisters tell him that he is special, as he's always looking out for them every single day, and that's why he's the most special brother to them. Moved by their words, Lincoln declares that he's good with that and, after Lily tells Lincoln that she loves him, the family engages in a group hug.
Suddenly, she hears Lincoln's booming voice and, realizing the Louds are back, promptly grabs the scepter to investigate. Back on the ship, Rita and Lynn Sr. are confused by an array of emojis they got from Leni, and when they question what it means, Lily, the only kid still on the boat, tells them that they went back to Loch Loud, prompting the panic-stricken parents to immediately turn around and head back as well. At the same time, Morag, riding on Lela, tells the Loud kids to expose themselves. Swiftly, Lucy is grabbed by Lucille, prompting the crazed duchess and the dragon to chase after them. At the dock, Rita, Lynn Sr. and Lily arrive to Loch Loud and meet up with Angus, who's telling them what the kids are doing, and proceed to go after them. Back at the fight, Lucy and Lucille are arriving in Lincoln's direction, and once Morag and Lela arrive, Lincoln quickly jumps onto Lela's back.
Additionally, a second live-action television film A Really Haunted Loud House premiered in September 2023, as well as a second animated feature film, The Casagrandes Movie, which premiered in March 2024 on Netflix. The rest of the Louds and Angus quickly rush to the castle, having witnessed Lincoln, Morag and Lela crashing there. Arriving in the courtyard, they spot the unconscious Lincoln and rush over to him, but are suddenly stopped by the still-possessed Lela.
